Coffee beans at Arbuste
Where it all began, talking shop with the baristas at Arbuste in Caen, France

It all begins in 2023, after I realized my colleagues and I were downing 4+ cups of Nespresso daily. I made myself a deal: be limited to only one cup a day, but make this cup excellent. In service of that goal, I began keeping a brew journal. This quickly evolved into a spreadsheet, and more spreadsheets followed.

With an interface slightly more friendly than a spreadsheet, Brew By Numbers retains this focus on data-driven brewing. There are essentially three factors brought together for analysis: how the coffee was brewed, what beans were used, and what you thought of your coffee. This pipeline removes much of the guesswork around parameter-pertinence (like wondering if next time you should brew longer vs. grind coarser). Although the person brewing the coffee still needs to make all sorts of decisions on their own, the decisions which are likely to dramatically impact a brew are the focus of this app. The goal is to make brewing great coffee reliable, regardless of the beans, brew method, or grinder.

Happy brewing, James
