It all begins in 2023, when my colleagues and I were regularly downing five joyless cups of Nespresso every day. Realizing this, I decided to make myself a deal: be limited to just one coffee a day, but make that one coffee very good. It was in service of that goal that I began my first brew journal—the earliest predecessor of Brew By Numbers!
Now, with an interface slightly less dorky than my spreadsheets, Brew By Numbers retains this focus on data-driven brewing. It brings together three questions for analysis:
- how was the coffee brewed?
- which beans were used?
- how did it taste?
The goal is to make brewing great coffee reliable—across all the beans, brew methods, and grinders. To get there, brewing needs to be consistent, the way of documenting needs to be consistent, and the way of reviewing needs to be consistent. From there, it's just a matter of picking a system and brewing!
